Three different island days
Isabela day tours: Tintoreras, Los Túneles or Sierra Negra?
One outing follows the bay, another explores lava formations at sea, and a third heads inland toward a volcanic caldera. Choose the landscape and activity you want first. A tour with the longest list of wildlife is not automatically the best fit.

The short answer
Choose Tintoreras for a bay-focused outing, Los Túneles for a separate marine excursion, and Sierra Negra for a guided land day.
Choose the activity, then the product
This is our editorial comparison of trip types. Exact durations, permitted stops and inclusions vary by operator and date. Compare the program you are actually booking rather than assuming a tour name is a fixed package.
| Option | Main experience | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Tintoreras | Nearby islet and marine wildlife outing | Boat, walking and snorkeling portions; what is permitted that day |
| Los Túneles / Cabo Rosa | Lava formations and surface snorkeling | Sea conditions, water sessions, equipment and landing arrangements |
| Sierra Negra / Volcán Chico | Guided inland walking and volcanic landscapes | Exact endpoint, walking distance, guide and site reservation |
Tintoreras and Los Túneles are separate outings
Tintoreras is associated with the islets close to Puerto Villamil; Los Túneles is a different marine excursion. If your time is limited, ask which experience adds most to the rest of your itinerary. Do not assume the two products visit the same place simply because both mention sharks or turtles.
DPNG’s Los Túneles field report documents walking and surface snorkeling, with observations including turtles, rays and whitetip sharks. Those are possible encounters, not a wildlife guarantee. Conditions determine what the crew can safely and legally do on the day.
Sierra Negra changes the rhythm
A guided hike is a useful choice when you want a land day between boat outings. Check whether the itinerary stops at the caldera area, continues toward Volcán Chico or follows a different sulfur-mines route. The names describe different programs; one universal walking distance would be misleading.
Ask an authorized operator to arrange the appropriate guide and reservation. The current park framework includes Volcán Chico and Minas de Azufre among the reservation-controlled sites. Cloud, rain, route conditions and access decisions can change the experience.
Concha de Perla is a different decision
The municipality describes Concha de Perla as a mangrove-fringed marine lagoon. It can be an option for a separate visit when current access and water conditions permit, rather than an automatic substitute for a guided offshore excursion. Check the on-site instructions and whether you need equipment or assistance.
For any water activity, discuss your swimming confidence, guide supervision, entry and exit, flotation and the option to remain out of the water. Calm-looking photographs and a short distance from shore do not establish that a site suits every swimmer.
Check departure island and the complete quote
A listing titled “Isabela day tour” may start in Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz and include long inter-island transfers. If you are already staying in Puerto Villamil, check the actual meeting point before buying. Conversely, a local Isabela outing does not automatically include your ferry from Santa Cruz.
Compare wetsuit, snorkel equipment, transport, guide, food and local charges, then read the cancellation conditions. Our suggestion for a varied stay is one marine outing, one guided land day and flexible time near town. Keep arrival and departure connections away from the activities you care about most.
